Almost 20 games into the season and the Mets find themselves 5th in the league in team ERA. That’s right, 5th in the league, not just the National League, the whole damn league. Yankees? well they’re 10th.
Now surely no one could’ve expected this. Not with a Johan Santana compliment of John Maine, Jon Niese, Mike Pelfrey, and Oliver Perez to start the season. But stranger things have happened in sports. Mets fans will embrace it and continue to root for their team like they expected this all along!
Lets take a closer look at the top 10 team ERA leaders.
Cardinals 2.72
Giants 2.78
Padres 2.87
Athletics 2.93
Mets 3.17
Rays 3.21
Mariners 3.41
Rockies 3.57
Twins 3.59
Yankees 3.72
The best part? This reflects the garbage that John Maine has served up every time out there and had it not been for him, Mets would be closer to first on this list. But considering the question marks going into the season, 5th is a great place to be on this list. Why this man is still in the rotation is beyond me? What else do we need to see from him to demote him? Seriously, last time out it was the non-pitching arm, what’s next?
Mets don’t need this and have far better options than Maine, as in Takahashi for one.
Oliver Perez is still trying to find his way with one great start, one horrendous start, and one that was mediocre. After Ollie, the rest of the rotation has flat out impressed.
Granted Pelfrey didn’t have his stuff last night, he still pulled out a win, 24 scoreless consecutive innings and counting. He walked more guys last night and threw a ton more pitches. He needs to study tape of his first three starts and duplicate those efforts.
After a disaster start, the Mets have respectfully brought themselves over .500, and in the middle of the pack, only 1.5 games behind the first place Phillies.
Let’s go Mets…

i don’t hate on maine, i hate on his performance and the fact that he’s hurting the team. maybe he’s just not the pitcher everyone thought he was, and it’s up to him to prove that he is. up until now, he’s done nothing but hurt the team and if this continues a change must be made
Stop hating on Maine. The guy bleeds blue & orange like the rest of us.
