In a bit about Baltimore being in on Texeira this off-season, Dierkes premises an interesting idea: which players are worth signing to a 10-year contract.
As is only ARod, Jeter, Helton have received deals going 10 years or more. And you could debate over the worthiness, but none of the deals have DEFINITELY been worth it. Neither Jeter or Helton have been MVP caliber. And ARod has the full trophy room without a championship. Point being, you could argue no one is worth the risk of a 10-year guaranteed big $ contract in baseball.
But if you were going to do it, who would be worthy of the deal?
Definitely not Texeira as Tim presumes in the post.
But Pujols comes to mind as the #1 guy. Best bat in baseball. After that: Hanley Ramirez, Grady Sizemore, Utley. Arod … maybe. Mauer and/or Morneau, Ryan Braun is getting on the radar. But that’s about it. (No pitcher is worth 10 years, the one I might consider is Lincecum.)
On the Mets … definitely Wright. And maybe Reyes.
Wright is a no-brainer, perhaps the noest-brainer after Pujols. Age, offense, defense, character all things considered, David Wright might be the 2nd most valuable property in baseball. Reyes is a 10 year both sides talent, but with a little more trepidation on his ability to stay solid. I’d probably trade Reyes for Sizemore. Definitely Ramirez. And when he’s in a funk I could even do someone lesser and a reliever who could get out Jody F’ing Gerut.
Anywaynot-happy-with-those-clowns-in-the-bullpen, Wright showed why he’s one of the few players who could ask for 10 years and get it with the walk-off bomb today. Holla at ya boy.
